The Great Outdoors
Whether enjoying a challenging climb up one of the Paps or taking a stroll along some of the 115 miles of coastline, offering everything from caves and cliffs to raised beaches and long stretches of white sand, Jura is a great place to walk and cycle. With just one single track road and little traffic, bikes are a great way to explore the island.
While out and about, as well as all the deer on the island, you’ll be amazed to discover that many rare species of plants, birds and mammals inhabit these areas. Whether it’s the seals basking on the rocks or the more elusive otters along the shore, there’s plenty of natural wonders in store.
And what could be more wonderful than the sight of a spectacular Golden Eagle in flight. With an incredible seven mating pairs now on the island, Jura has become one of only eight designated Special Protection Areas for the Golden Eagle in the UK. For further info visit www.snh.gov.uk
Boat charters
Fancy a spin up the coast to see the legendary Corryvreckan – the third largest whirlpool in Europe? As you sail along the 27 mile coastline from Craighouse to the Corryvreckan, watch out for otters, seals, golden eagles, herons, oyster catchers, swans, hen harriers, buzzards, artic skuas, arctic terns and if you are very lucky – the amazing sea eagles and minke whales.
