Jura Fast Ferry Service awarded ‘one off’ funding from Argyll and Bute Council
Argyll and Bute Council has agreed to give the Jura Development Trust £24,000 to keep the passenger ferry service between Jura and Tayvallich operational for summer 2011. The money is a one off until the findings of the Scottish Ferries Review are known.
It has been agreed at a meeting today (June 2nd) there will be support for the Jura Development Trust from the Business Gateway team with the development of a business model. The council is fully supportive of the case the trust is putting to the Scottish Government for sustainable government funding of the Jura to Tayvallich fast ferry service through the Scottish Ferries Review.
Spokesperson for Rural and Island Affairs, Housing and Gaelic, Councillor Robin Currie said “I am absolutely delighted that Argyll and Bute Council is financially supporting the Jura passenger Service this year as the continuation of this service is vitally important to the economy of the island. Myself and others have been determined that this service continues this year because if it were not to run, it would be extremely difficult to resurrect the service next year. The Council and Jura Development Trust both agree that the funding for ferry services should be the remit of Scottish Government, so jointly we will be campaigning for the Scottish Government to take over the funding of the service in future years.”

Jura Development Trust & Jura Hall LEADER Funding Success
Published:August 31, 2010
JURA HALL UPGRADE & ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS PHASE 1
In August 2010, after a frantic two weeks of pulling all the information and funding streams together GATE Development Officer Alison Lindsay was successful in her LEADER application for funding to realise the much needed Car Park and outdoor amenity area for Jura Hall. This community development was an ambition of the previous IATE Project and is included in The Jura Community Plan Booklet.
This collaborative project between Jura Hall and Jura Development Trust was match-funded against Jura Development Trust’s Climate Challenge Fund award on behalf of The Hall. The Car Park will take shape along the north foreshore from The Hall on land transferred from The Ardfin Estate via The Jura Development Trust to The Hall, effectively building with armoured stone frontage into the sea. Architects drawings of this, also showing the Phase 2 Hall Extension ambitions are on display from August until the CCF refurbishment begins in The Hall’s windows – please have a look! Planning Permission is already in process.
It is hoped that not only will these improvements provide disabled access parking, along with the easing of parking congestion and improving road safety for regular users of The Hall and hub area of Craighouse – but also an extra amenity space for countryside access and island events – book your ringside seat for Regatta 2011!
Many thanks to everyone involved, notably: Jura Community Council and all The Hall’s neighbours and neighbouring businesses for their letters of support and good wishes. Watch this space and Jura Hall’s notice board windows for further updates.
The Climate Challenge Fund refurbishment works to The Hall are due to commence in autumn 2010 – once The Jura Music Festival has finished. A contractor for the work has now been appointed, after full pre-qualification and tender process – overseen by Stewart Consulting. We are looking forward to a warmer, more energy efficient, freshly clad building emerging.
Moorings and Pontoons
Published:July 6, 2010
Bad weather early in the year delayed the start of the 2009 yachting season. More bad weather in August resulted in a lower number of vessels than originally projected using the facilities.
High insurance and service charges meant that the project didn’t break even financially.
However, 2009 was the first full operating season for the project and we hope that 2010 will bring better weather and allow the project to meet it’s full potential.
A questionnaire distributed to users during the feedback recorded a positive feedback on the improved facilities and most were happy to pay the £10 overnight fee. A number of users stated that the provision of a water supply would be useful. The Trust has investigated this option but is struggling to find to a suitable resolve at present.
Jura Passenger Ferry
Published:
PASSENGER FERRY SAVED! JULY 2010. The passenger ferry has received the necessary funding support in order to complete this season and the full three year trial operating until Tuesday 28th September 2010, thanks to Argyll & Bute Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Cllr Duncan MacIntyre says “The passenger service has been very popular with both islanders and visitors however the service can only carry on if it is financially viable. While no-one wants to see the service disappear we have to ensure that any support to private enterprises is made on the basis that the service is financially successful. I urge everyone travelling to Jura to consider using this ferry - it will only survive if more people pay to use it.” Kerrien Grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said: “HIE is keen that the pilot period is fully completed as the resulting data will be an opportunity for Jura Development Trust to evidence the usage and value of the service.”
The ferry is a local project owned by the Development Trust. A Rural Community Transport Initiative grant administered by Argyll & Bute Council, fare income and local donations, funds its operation.
The ferry’s operations have seen a significant boost to Jura’s economy, estimated by an independent consultant at £3 for every £1 invested. The social impact has been just as positive, making it so easy to get to and from the mainland for residents, homeowners, relatives, friends and visitors.
Earlier this year a Cost Benefit Analysis, funded by HIE, was conducted by an independent business consultant. In his initial draft report he summarises the situation as follows:
“The pilot ferry service has achieved significant social impacts on the community in better access to services, reduced sense of isolation and increased use of holiday homes. It has also levered a significant economic return, which is providing direct income and business and employment opportunities.
At this stage in the pilot, with awareness still growing and the impact of marketing still to be realised, the ferry is already delivering important returns for the community in social and economic terms.”
We are now working with local councillors and Argyll & Bute Council along with European funders to ensure that the success of the 3 year pilot leads to it becoming a permanent feature of life here on Jura.
Finally a big THANK YOU to you, our passengers for your support over the 3 year pilot project period and to Nicol MacKinnon for running such a great service.

Pierhead Picnic Area
Published:
Using the remaining ‘Wee Green Grant’ from the CVS Inverclyde, the Trust was able to purchase and plant some shrubs and bedding plants in the barrels kindly donated by Jura Distillery.
The children of Small Isles Primary created some marine themed art works from plywood which they painted and which were attached along the fence. The area has proved a popular spot for both locals and visitors and we have to say an enormous thanks to our new Jura Roadman – Dodo who has kindly made sure there is a water supply for the plants.
Growth at the Edge
Published:
Alison Lindsay started, part time, with the Trust at the end of last year as G.A.T.E Development officer. She has produced this report: – The IATE Project came to its natural conclusion in spring 2009 and in order to build on the community’s achievements over this period, EU/LEADER funding was granted for Growth At The Edge (GATE) status by Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE) with recruitment into post of a Development Officer by November 2009.
The project is progressing with the starting brief of collating information in the form of an audit of community facilities and organisations – a snapshot of where the island is now. I am required by the powers-that-be to conduct a consultation of the community, in the form of a postal survey of all residents aged 12 and over – this was last done to this scale 5 years ago at the beginning of the IATE initiative.
Why do we need this? Well – if Jura is to get our slice of the considerable public investment funds available to continue progressive investment into the island economy – we are required to ask the community what exactly is on their ‘wish list’ and how they would like this to be achieved, or not – it’s for the community to decide.
Again, with GATE, Jura is ahead of the game – initially one of only two GATE areas out of the proposed 40 in Scotland who actually have a Development Officer in post – so some of the technical resources from ‘on-HIE’ (excuse the pun!) have yet to be delivered…..watch this space! Meanwhile, our door is always open to any group or individual who seeks guidance, training or funding options.
Powerdown
Published:
Rob Tìgeir replaced Kirsten Gow as part-time Powerdown Project Officer from September 2010. Rob continues to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across the island. This includes working with the school, running energy saving events, providing advice to individuals and developing community projects. The JDT worked in conjunction with the Hall Committee on the recent successful Climate Challenge Fund bid. As a result the project has been awarded a £126,735 grant to refurbish the hall and make it highly energy efficient. This will vastly improve the usability of the hall during winter and provide a strong community focus for other energy efficiency projects. A second Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) bid to investigate a woodfuel pilot project on Jura, using local resources and providing training to local people is underway. In addition, Rob continues to lobby to ensure that remote communities including Jura get full access to the government’s energy efficiency and renewable energy advice and assistance packages, in line with mainland communities.
Spaces needed
We need a space to store 40 tonnes of wood on Jura – if you have something suitable please get in touch. We are also organising a chainsaw training course and need a well lit indoor space for two days in November – again if you ahve something suitable please get in touch.
Coming up
Upcoming events include a Woodfuel seminar on 23 October 2010 at Jura Hotel – come along and find out what is best to burn and what’s not and also hear about how to select the woodburner that’s right for you. We also have a presentation on how community groups can get involved in green energy. The chainsaw training is due to take place in November – I’m trying to gauge how many are interested – if you are please drop me a line. It’s for chainsaws up to 15″ and is for two days followed by on the job experience with experienced foresters.
The Service Point
Published:July 5, 2010
Although saved from this year’s round of budget cuts the Service Point still faces an uncertain future.
The JDT Board are attempting to convince the Council that the Service Point is an essential need for the island and that the Council must continue to fund it. Various council and other organisations are known to use the facilities without being charged. This is being examined by Council Officers.
The Service Point now offers Wi-Fi along with all other office services including passport photos. It is open Monday – Friday from 10am – 1pm.
