Angling on Jura
" In the evening I nipped out to fish a small burn just north of Craighouse where it enters the sea. It was wet and humid and the midges were out, but this was the first rain since June so sea trout beckoned. The burn was a torrent and though a couple of small herling were caught where the frothing, peat-stained water met with the salt of the sea, no fish of any size were showing.
The next morning was spent fishing quickly down the stunning River Corran through heather and gorse, the Paps in the background and the sea to the east. Following the course of these small island spate rivers to where their journey ends and heather turns to sand is a fine way to fish. But the rain had been heavy and the stream raged, only producing one small trout. No time to fish the Market Loch for brownies, or the famous River Lussa and the suitably named Fishing Loch which was formed in its course.
To the north west of the island lies Ruantallain Estate and a mind-boggling array of fine trout lochs which can fish phenomenally well in May. A friend of Euan's recently caught some fine sea trout in Lowlandmans's Bay and I won't even mention the size of some sea-faring trout that have been known to appear in another of the many lochs, or spinning for saithe in the sea. Just scratching the surface of Jura could take years. "
